DG Packaging Certificate (危包证)
Last updated: June 14, 2026
- The DG Packaging Certificate (危包证) is a mandatory Chinese government document verifying DG packaging meets UN standards
- Issued by CIQ (China Inspection and Quarantine) after physical testing — typically 5-10 working days
- Without this certificate, DG cargo cannot be legally exported from China — no exceptions
DG Packaging Certificate (危包证) is a mandatory Chinese government certificate verifying that dangerous goods packaging meets UN performance standards. Issued by CIQ (China Inspection and Quarantine) after physical testing, it is a legal prerequisite for all DG exports from China and is required before the Maritime DG Declaration can be submitted.
Chinese: 危险货物包装证明 / 危包证 — formally: 出境危险货物运输包装使用鉴定结果单
How to Obtain a DG Packaging Certificate
The manufacturer applies to their local CIQ office (now part of China Customs) with samples of the DG packaging. CIQ conducts physical tests: drop test, leakproofness test, hydraulic pressure test, stacking test. Testing takes 5-10 working days. Once the packaging passes, CIQ issues the certificate. The certificate is specific to a packaging type, manufacturer, and DG class — if you change packaging or DG class, a new certificate is required.
Practical Example
A Shandong chemical manufacturer needs to export Class 8 corrosive liquid (sulfuric acid) in 25L plastic jerrycans. Before shipment, the jerrycan manufacturer applies to Qingdao CIQ with jerrycan samples for UN packaging testing. CIQ tests include drop test (1.8m for PG II), leakproofness test, and stacking test. After passing (7 working days), CIQ issues the DG Packaging Certificate specifying: packaging type (1H1 plastic jerrycan), UN marking, DG class compatibility, and validity period. Great Hensen then uses this certificate to submit the Maritime DG Declaration and book the shipment.
Related Terms
- Maritime DG Declaration — requires a valid DG Packaging Certificate
- MSDS — safety data sheet required alongside the certificate
- IMDG Code — defines the UN packaging standards the certificate verifies
Frequently Asked Questions
Who issues the DG Packaging Certificate and how long does it take?
The DG Packaging Certificate is issued by CIQ (China Inspection and Quarantine, now under China Customs) after physical testing of the packaging. The manufacturer applies through their local CIQ office with packaging samples. Testing typically takes 5-10 working days. The certificate is valid for a specific packaging type and DG class.
Can I ship DG from China without a DG Packaging Certificate?
No. The DG Packaging Certificate is mandatory for all DG exports from China. Without it, the Maritime DG Declaration cannot be submitted, carriers will reject the booking, and terminals will not accept the container. Attempting to ship without it violates Chinese customs law — cargo seizure, fines, and legal action can follow.
What is the Chinese name for the DG Packaging Certificate?
The official name is 出境危险货物运输包装使用鉴定结果单, commonly shortened to 危包证 (Wēi bāo zhèng). When communicating with Chinese factories, always use 危包证 — they will understand immediately. See our DG freight guide for full documentation checklists.
